Bellevue Memoirs is a collection of Dr. John Beaulieu's stories of patients and the experiences of working with them as a researcher and therapist at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital. After years of being with patients inside and outside the hospital, he realized Bellevue is Everywhere. Bellevue Psychiatric is part of a continuum that exists in all our lives. These stories easy to read, heart warming, fun, sometimes challenging, and teach life lessons for all of us.

John Beaulieu, ND, Ph.D. has written a courageously heartwarming and upbeat narrative of his trajectory and development as a caring mental health and activity therapist in Indianapolis and New York City. The book provides the reader with a close up unvarnished glimpse into the mental and emotional terrain of a young therapist who is set on making the world a better place in multiple psychiatric settings. An interesting aspect of John's work is that he is able to tell his story without the normal psychological and psychiatric terminology which can disarmingly put the reader at ease especially those without a professional therapeutic background.

Reading Bellevue Memoirs may cause you to pause and reflect upon your own life, as you "discover" that any distance you may feel you have between his characters and their stories and yourself and your own personal story may indeed be illusory. In this sense, the book can make you feel uncomfortable since you will be called upon to take a deep and hard look at your own life and perhaps ask yourself difficult questions such as whether you have wasted time and opportunities during your lifetime or what the meaning of your life might be. Indeed, you may find that the various stories John relates may make you stop in your tracks at some point and you'll be "forced" to put the book down in order to reflect upon notions of fairness and equity, "meaning," and/or meaningfulness.

For example, on pages 52-53 in a section titled New York Drag Races, John recites an uncomfortable and unseemly aspect of life in NYC: "My new office window overlooked the New York City morgue....On warm summer days, I would often sit and watch the bodies arrive, sort of a New York style meditation. Every now and then ambulance drivers would play games with the bodies....[T]hey would line up two gurneys like cars at a drag race....There was a slope at the entrance of the dock which provided an opportunity for the bodies to gain speed before hitting the dock wall. The drivers would let go of the bodies about twenty feet from the loading dock wall. It was quite a scene watching two corpses drag racing along 28th Street to their final destination. As they moved closer to the docks, the drivers would start cheering and rooting for their body. When the gurneys hit the dock, the bodies would slide off onto the smooth platform, often for ten feet before coming to a stop. The drivers would run up to the platform and measure which body had traveled the farthest. The winner would then collect his due."

Another very disconcerting example of the power of John's narrative appears on pages 89-90 where he discusses his perspective on life and a "complicated" relationship with a colleague: "At every moment, we are all constantly moving along a continuum of sanity and insanity. When I worked at Bellevue, I met a surgeon when I was having lunch at the cafeteria. He was in hospital greens with his stethoscope hanging around his neck. We talked about golf and basketball for about fifteen minutes until his beeper went off and he disappeared. Three months later, I was walking home through the Bowery. A man sitting on the sidewalk leaning against an abandoned building caught my eye. He was dirty, unshaven, and smelled of alcohol and urine. He wasn't aware that I was looking at him. I began to walk down the street when I realized he was the surgeon with whom I had had lunch with!...I couldn't believe it. One day he was a doctor performing surgery, the next day he was a drunk living on the streets of New York City! I went back and sat next to him....He told me that coming to the Bowery, getting drunk, and being crazy was his way of unwinding from the hospital and the pressures of surgery....I asked him if he would be OK. He said `I do this every month. It's my therapy.' I never saw him again. I have heard that he is a well-known surgeon and sought after by many people around the world."

In short, reading Bellevue Memoirs will force you to experience a wide range of emotions. The book will make you laugh, cry, sigh with despair, and perhaps shake your head in disbelief, all while you travel a trail which causes a search for meaning. In the end, John's story may transform you since it is sure to take you to an inner place of reflection. After you read Bellevue Memoirs you are sure to be "different" as you will begin to see the world around you through a less filtered lens.

If you're looking for a book on therapeutics which takes the heartfelt caring of a therapist to the next level of recursivity, Bellevue Memoirs is it! I wholeheartedly recommend John's book to anyone who wants to know more about therapy from a therapist's viewpoint and simultaneously know more about The City That Never Sleeps. 5 STARS!
